Ever been on a weekend safari trip and wished you could give a little more than just the fee at the gate?
Well The Friends of the Pilanesberg Society allow you to do just that with their volunteer Work Party weekends, which are held once a month in Pilanesberg National Park, Borakalalo and Kagswane (Rustenburg). These voluntary weekends are a novel and enjoyable way to spend a bit of time out in the bushveld. Members of the society bring a number of skills to the table, including woodworking, brick laying, cement mixing, painting and digging.
This is a great opportunity for anyone that loves to get their hands dirty and enjoys the great outdoors, and the atmosphere is always a fun and social one.
All volunteer projects are carried out in conjunction with park requirements and The Friends of the Pilanesberg Society generally raises funds or seeks sponsorship for the purchase of materials, with the Work Party groups then providing the labour.
Some of the Work Party projects are alien bush clearing, building & maintaining hides, development of trails in Borakalalo and clearing of the Iron Age site in the Pilanesberg National Park.
The Friends of the Pilanesberg Society is a voluntary organisation whose main objective is to aid the conservation of the habitat and the fauna and flora of the Pilanesberg National Park, as well as certain other sites in the North-West Province.
The society works in conjunction with the North West Parks & Tourism Board. Once a project has been agreed on by the Board and the Friends of Pilanesberg Society committee, the society attempts to obtain funding through both corporate and private sponsorship.
So if volunteering isn’t your thing, then monetary donations are always welcome too. Whatever you choose, you can make a valuable and rewarding contribution to the Pilanesberg, helping to ensure that this wonderful park continues to thrive.

Good evening!
My name is Filipa and I am from Portugal. I am currently gathering information to be able to apply for a voluntary exchange. I am participating in the contest with a friend, Sara, and the project consists in volunteer work in various countries, and the main goal is to help!
We found your institution and we are interested in it so much. We would like to know what kind of activities you can offer us and, for additional information, I would like to know what are the costs of accommodation and food within the volunteer community.
I would like to thank you for your attention.
However, we are still in the phease of research. We are obliged to contact volunteer institutions and obtain an acceptance proof. The final result of the contest will come out in August. The project for the winners will begin in September. Just around that time we can confirm the dates.
With best regards,
Filipa Rocha
